Ephesians 2:10 [NLT] For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
As part of my job, I am on an advisory board for a university medical center. On the day of our last meeting, I learned that one of our students was in the life-support unit at that medical center. She had been in a terrible car accident, and things didn’t look good. All reports back in my department were that she could not have visitors. But I was scheduled to have a meeting at that same medical center, and so I debated trying to see her. She had not yet taken a course from me, so I really didn’t know her. Plus, my visit could be interpreted as “arrogance” by my colleagues. Her family might also interpret my visit as an intrusion. And so, I hesitated and prayed.
Scripture reminds us that we are God’s masterpiece. Well, you might be, but I know I am just a masterpiece yet fully painted. I know I can do good things, but I know I can also mess things up in the process.
After prayer, I decided to try to visit and, at the entrance of her ward, I played my “pastor’s card” to get through. To no avail, I was told only family could go see her. But as I started to leave, I heard a voice saying he was her father. This man was sitting all alone, clearly being in this ward for countless hours. With his permission, I joined him. We talked about his daughter and the Great Healer. We talked about the plans He surely still has for her. And we prayed and hugged, and prayed some more. And after my advisory board meeting, I came back and found her entire family! Brother and sisters. Husband and in-laws. Her mother. And we prayed some more.
And so, my workday was much different than I had planned. But my effort to do a good thing was certainly part of His plan for me – something He planned well before I accepted the invitation to join that advisory board. And yes, I am still a masterpiece yet fully painted. But on this workday, I feel a bit more of His colors and paint!
Today at work, you may have an opportunity to do the good things He planned for you long ago! Don’t hesitate. While He created you anew in Jesus Christ, God still knows that His work in you remains unfinished. He knows you are still a masterpiece yet fully painted. He’s got the paint, and He knows the colors. And that is why He remains with you always.
Father God, I can’t wait for the day that I am Your completed masterpiece! Until then, I know You are with me while You add color and paint to my ways. And I thank You for making me in ways You want. In Your Son’s name, I pray. Amen.
