3 John 11 [NIV] Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God.

Reflection

Once a month, I lunch with a friend who deals with a bully at work. He tells me the latest horror story about this manager who seems bent on terrifying certain workers, including my friend. Regretfully, workplace bullying law is not as clear as it should be where my friend lives and works. Its consequences may be discriminatory or cause emotional damage, hence illegal, but coming down hard on some workers is not by itself against the law. And so each time we have lunch, I remind my friend that his manager is imitating evil. Then we talk about the possibility that workplace bullies have not seen God. Then we pray that my friend will imitate good, not evil, in responding to this bully.

Scripture reminds us that modeling the example of Christ is not an option – not even when confronted with a workplace bully. It is the duty and responsibility of a believer to please Jesus. Period. In fact, the greatest enemy of the cross is not the nonbeliever but those who profess Christ and lead others astray by their nonbiblical values, actions, and words.

If you are harassed by a workplace bully, remember others are watching how you react. Even the bully is watching how you react. Some may want you to fight and get even, but God wants you to do otherwise. While you may need to take grievant action to protect yourself, imitate good in doing so. Imitate good in dealing daily with the bully. And while it may be true that workplace bullies have not seen God, you have seen God! You are a believer.

Today at work, do not respond with evil to the bully’s evil. For you, that is not an option.

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for keeping my workplace free of bullies. Yet I know some workplaces are filled with evil-doers. Help believers find ways to imitate good. Let all believers join in to help those who face a workplace bully. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.
