The Christian Public Servant – “return with humility”

March 5, 2018 – Monday

James 4:10 [KJV] Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

A couple of years ago, I was somewhat arrogant and my attitude caused me to fail out of the Airfield Management Career program in the United States Air Force. At that time, I was even threatened with termination. As others passed their exams and prepared for their first duty stations, I questioned my intelligence. I felt foolish. Alone. Ashamed.

From this turmoil, the Air Force assigned me to another job that I am to hold until the end of my contract. I am now a cook. While this is not a career field I would choose, it is honorable duty. And, at first, I did struggle with negativity, but I am now focused on doing my job with pride, completing a graduate degree, and preparing for future career opportunities.

Scripture reminds us to be humble, not arrogant or pretentious. Everything God does in our lives has a reason – even when we stray towards vanity. When we return with humility, He motivates and advances us. He lifts us up!

At work today, do not be arrogant. If things go bad, do not respond with pretentiousness. No. If things go bad, return with humility. You may feel ashamed. You may feel alone in your workplace. However, do not become blinded by negativity. Believe me, tough times do not last forever. Just return with humility, grow in pride of working hard, and know He will lift you up.

Tomorrow will be better. Just return with humility, and He will lift you up!

Dear God, in all my work, whatever it is, permit me to humbly come closer to You. I know You will lift me up! In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
