Jonah 4:10-11[NIV] But the LORD said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”
One day after work, I had the opportunity to brighten someone’s hope. She was suspicious, expecting me to tow a hard line like the rest of the world. But I pointed out that, as a follower of Jesus, I am in the Grace Business. And so, I took the time to work with her to help a friend. I did not know either of them, but both needed grace – the way I need grace from God.
It is easy to think there is a total lack of grace in the world today. We cannot seem to speak to one another without name-calling and hateful speech. People are massacred. There is no place in which we can be safe – not at work, nor at school, nor at church, not even going to and coming from the workplace – this lack of grace is killing us all.
As scripture shows, grace is not an invention of the New Testament. While we sometimes wonder why God permits so much hatred in our world, the Word reminds us that God is full of grace – and has been from the very beginning.
Are you in the Grace Business? How often do you take offense and not strike back? Today, will you show grace toward your supervisor? Subordinates? Coworkers? Citizens you serve? Will you be in the Grace Business in that meeting today? How about in the breakroom? Will you remember that, because of God’s great love for you, He holds back and you should, too.
As this workweek begins, stop and think of how graceful God is toward you. Perhaps you cannot change the hatred in the world – prevent all the atrocities committed. But you can brighten someone’s hope. You do not have to tow a hard line. You can remember you are in the Grace Business because God is within you.
Today at work, remember and practice the Business you are in.
Dear Lord, help me be as graceful as You and see those around me in need of that grace – just as much as I need it. At work today, keep me safe from this world’s view of others. Allow me to see people as Your sheep that I need to feed. Only then can I have the concern for others You have for me. In Your name, I pray. Amen.
